E053 Engineering Workshop on Case Histories of Design & Construction of Bored Piles 1 Day

Introduction
SECTION 1
• Overview of pile foundation design: pile classification, design principles, common pile types & their applications & limitations, pile selection chart.
• Practical bored pile foundation design with particular reference to boring, reinforcement cage and concreting. How these can affect the performance of bored piles? Mitigations against what can go wrong at site? Scope of design verifications/analysis/calculations to meet EuroCode 7 requirements with examples will be illustrated. Scope of SI & ground characterization will be elaborated.
• Scope of inspection & recording for bored pile installation. Significance of these as part of QC?

SECTION 2
• Scope & methods of design validation to verify bored piles capacity & structural integrity. Case histories?
• Works specification for bored pile installation. Standard Spec & typical addendum specifications.

SECTION 3
• Typical case histories to illustrate how to design bored piles to meet EC 7 requirements for various site/subsoil conditions & typical buildings/structures with particular reference to SI interpretation/parameters selection, estimation of axial, lateral load capacity, uplift capacity, settlement and scheme of design validation will be illustrated and presented.
• Detail Case Study 1
Project briefs related to site conditions/site terrains, loadings and Client’s requirements for a mixed commercial housing project consisting of three blocks of high-rise RC buildings including deep basement car park near a high slope where high retaining walls are required. The project site geology is Kenny hill formation & the site terrain is generally hilly. Site plan & background info will be given. Scope of case study:

Case Study 2 is as Case Study 1 but in limestone formation
• Case Study 3
Three maintained load test/PDA results for bored piles will be given for the participants to evaluate, to interpret and to assess/recommend whether the results are technically acceptable or otherwise.
Comments & advice for the case studies will be discussed.

Strength : • Published more than 50 technical papers about geotechnical and road engineering in various local and international conferences/seminars/journal.
Current job : • Director of E-Geo Consultant Sdn. Bhd.
Biodata : Ir. Neoh has been a Vice Chairman of IEM (2004-2006), Chairman of Technical Committee on Geotechnics (TC5)of Road Association of Malaysia (1997-2006) and Chairman of IEM Geotechnical Technical Division (1996-1998),etc.

He joined JKR Malaysia for 25 years after graduated from UM in 1974. He joined IKRAM Runding Sdn Bhd as Director from 1999 to 2000. Since 2001, he is the Director of E-GEO Consultant Sdn Bhd.

He has published more than 50 technical papers about geotechnical and road engineering in various local & international conferences/seminars/journal.

He is a registered BEM Accredited Independent Checker (Geotechnical).
