Biodata : Ir. Neoh has been a Vice Chairman of IEM (2004-2006), Chairman of Technical Committee on Geotechnics (TC5)of Road Association of Malaysia (1997-2006) and Chairman of IEM Geotechnical Technical Division (1996-1998),etc.

He joined JKR Malaysia for 25 years after graduated from UM in 1974. He joined IKRAM Runding Sdn Bhd as Director from 1999 to 2000. Since 2001, he is the Director of E-GEO Consultant Sdn Bhd.

He has published more than 50 technical papers about geotechnical and road engineering in various local & international conferences/seminars/journal.

He is a registered BEM Accredited Independent Checker (Geotechnical).

• Overview of Pile Foundation Design: design practice/concept, common pile types & their applications & limitations, pile selection chart.
• Practical Bored Pile Foundation Design: planning scope of SI, SI report evaluation & interpretation. Selection of design methods & parameters for design verification/calculations. QC & design validation. Works Spec.
• QC & mitigations against what can go wrong for bored pile installation with particular reference to boring, inserting reinforcement cage & concreting.
• Bored pile testing to check structural integrity & capacity: types of test methods (MLT, PDA & PIT), practice, planning, execution & evaluation/ interpretation of test results with case histories.
• Brief case histories of bored pile design with particular reference to estimation of axial capacity, lateral capacity & settlement in treacherous limestone formation, granite formation & Metasedimentary rock formation, etc.
• How to carry out bored pile design to meet requirements of EuroCode 7 (Part 1 & 2) will also be presented & compared with current design practice (SLD) with examples.
• Comprehensive technical notes and slides will be illustrated and distributed to participants for reference when doing the assignment/case studies.

SESSION 2-Case Study 1
• Project briefs related to site conditions/site geology/site terrains, layout plan, loadings and Client’s requirements for a mixed commercial building/housing project consisting of one block of high-rise RC buildings including deep basement car park near a high slope, etc., will be given.
• The participants are invited to participate the discussion:
a) How to plan necessary scope of SI for the project with particular reference to SI methods/tests, spacing & criteria of terminating the BH/test depth. Type & frequency of insitu testing & sampling for lab tests, etc. CP/reference?
b) SI report will be subsequently given and the participants are invited to evaluate & interpret SI results. Prepare generalized subsoil profile & select parameters & WT for design verification/calculations. Select suitable pile systems and retaining wall systems for the project. Compare the pros and cons for each feasible systems considered. Give basis of selection and justifications. Recommend the most appropriate system for implementation.
c) How to design the piling system recommended including estimation of geotechnical pile axial capacity, lateral pile capacity, negative friction, settlement plus structural capacity, etc. Criteria of termination of piles at site as construction control & basis?
d) Recommendation of piling systems shall also include pile installation method and necessary precautions against possible excessive installation/installation stresses and potential pile structural integrity problems. List what can go wrong at site (based on SI report & site conditions) and necessary precautions/mitigations during the installation.
e) Propose necessary and appropriate scope of design validation and QC tests/measurements/observations/inspections to ensure the proposed pile systems recommended have adequate design details for successful implementation.
• Participants will be given adequate guides and advice during the course of the workshop.

SESSION 3-Case Study 2-Bored Pile Design Report
• A bored pile design report including site conditions, site geology, SI results, pile selection, design verification/calculations for capacity, scope of design validation, design drawings, etc., will be given to participants for perusal and auditing/comments. Participants are required to identify the shortfalls and inadequacies in the design report and give advice/recommendations to improve the reporting. Issues and aspects that shall be focused for auditing are: Are site conditions given adequate & comprehensive for the targeted readers/Client? Purpose & significance of site geology information in pile foundation report? Scope of SI adequate & comprehensive according to normal design standard/CP?
• Any lacking or inadequacy in SI? Additional SI scope? Is the proposed pile type technically acceptable? Any more appropriate or cost-effective piling system? Design method to check pile capacity realistic & satisfactory? The proposed scope of QC & design validation to check structural integrity & capacity adequate? Construction details of pile with respect to structural details (reinforcement, joint, concreting requirements, etc) and construction controls adequate & comprehensive? Works specification?
• All comments & recommendations shall be based on technical requirements from CP & good engineering practice/references.
• Guidelines for pile design report with particular to minimum scope & contents of reporting will be discussed & illustrated.

SESSION 4-Case Study 3-Pile Testing
• Several selected maintained load test/HSDPT/PDA/PIT results for bored piles will be given for the participants to evaluate, to interpret and assess/recommend whether the results are technically acceptable or otherwise.
• Comments & advice for the case studies/histories will be discussed.
