Introduction
Building and civil engineering projects on or with compacted or uncompacted fills form the major part of the construction industrys activities. Large man-made structures such as earth dams, road embankments, building platforms, reclaimed land, etc., are built of engineered fills. The need to understand the behavior of various types of fills in various conditions and mitigations against what can go wrong are an important part of the continuing education of practicing engineers. Introduction & development of new materials, revised works specification, ground improvement techniques, improved QC testing & design validation methods are continually taking place. This workshop is aimed to illustrate the engineering principles and properties required to understand the behavior and performance of various types of fills plus case histories of design, construction & testing.
Earthwork practice especially those in hilly terrains, including planning, execution and preparation of geotechnical report to meet local authorities/IKRAM requirements will also be elaborated & illustrated with case histories.

SECTION 1: Overview
Principles & theories about engineered fills: compaction theories, peak/critical/residual shear strength, collapse settlement, stress-strain behavior of compacted fills of cohesive & cohesionless soils in saturated & unsaturated conditions, etc.
Types of engineered fills, their uses, typical design model, method of construction & control, performance & design validation, etc., with selected examples Works specification & materials for acceptance criteria, design standards, design principles/concepts, etc. SI practice, design methods & design parameters required for earth dams, road embankments, building platforms, reclaimed land. Bearing capacity, stability & deformation/settlement estimation, etc. What are the problems of new & old uncompacted or lightly compacted fill for building and road embankment purposes? How to evaluate the performance and estimate the deformation/settlement of new and existing fills for building and road embankment purposes? Checklist for shallow foundation design in fill ground. |
