COURSE OUTLINE
SESSION 1: Properties, Composition and Identification of Geosynthetics and Related Materials
• Historical development of geosynthetics.
• Understanding properties of polymers as basic constituent of geosynthetics.
• Types and forms for geotechnical & environmental engineering applications.
• Key functions of geosynthetics.
• Examples of applications of geosynthetics.

SESSION 2: Testing and Current Test Standards
- How to correctly specify geosynthetics
- Interpretation of technical properties
• Update and current test standards for geosynthetics.
• Understanding index testing & performance testing and their relevance to field applications.
• Interpretation of test results.
• Development of Malaysian test Standards.
• Design by functional engineering properties approach.
• Understanding properties of geosynthetics prevailing to applications – problems and common errors.
• Workshop exercise on writing specification.

SESSION 3: Geosynthetic for Infrastructures (Soft Soil Stabilization & Paving)
• Understanding geosynthetic design as separator and properties required for design.
• Design procedure to current practice & method statement for installation.
• Case histories – failure and success and why?
• Specification and relevance of properties.
• Paving Fabrics.

SESSION 4: Embankments on Poor Foundations
• Understanding geosynthetic functions for high embankments constructed over soft foundations and methods of stabilization including piled embankments.
• Design exercise as per current practice with reference to instrumented embankment behaviour.
• Method statement for construction with case histories.

SESSION 5: Vertical Walls and Steep Slopes
• Principle of geosynthetic reinforced soil structures.
• Critical testing regime and parameters for design.
• Understanding current design codes,eg. BS.
• Design and specification exercise.
• Method statement for construction and site supervisions.

SESSION 6: Geosynthetics for Marines and Environmental Applications
• Geosystems for hydraulic structures.
• Landfill design with geosynthetics.

SESSION 7: Current Development of Geosynthetics
• Soil structure monitoring.

Biodata : Ir. Dr. Loke Kean Hooi obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Honours) in 1987 and Doctor of Philosophy from University of Strathclyde, UK in 1991 on Geosynthetics and Geotechnical Engineering. His former position from 2004 to 2006 was act as GM of Polyfelt Asia Sdn. Bhd. and he is currently GM of TenCate Geosynthetics Asia Sdn. Bhd.

Ir. Dr. Loke has conducted many short courses, lectures on geosynthetics to government (JPS, JKR, PKNS) agencies, engineering institutions, universities, consultants and Professional Institution (IEM, ACEM, IKRAM) on:
• Types of geosynthetics, manufacturing process and their applications,
• Design of reinforced soil structures,
• Design of road and embankments,
• Landfill design and construction,
• Coastal and riverbank protection design,
• Geosynthetic instrumentation and monitoring
• Geosynthetics for disaster mitigation eg, tsunami, earthquakes etc

He also authored and co-authored more than 50 technical papers and journals in national and international conferences.

Ir. Dr. Loke Kean Hooi obtained the 2006 Joint Research Innovation Award awarded by the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), Malaysia for development of ‘intelligent’ geosynthetic
